Mercy Metal Company

A Branding Case Study

For this case study, I spent time with my client, who’s a small business owner who handcrafts silver jewelry. Katarina has been silversmithing under the brand name “Mercy Metal Company” for about two years now. Once started as a hobby, she now sells her pieces in many local shops. She has become quite the success in creating rings, bracelets, pendants, and, more recently, bolo ties!

My goal for this project was to design and craft a logo, along with other marketing material, for MMC to have a brand image. The company owner and I had worked together to create the image she wanted the brand to represent. I was given a lot of creative freedom with this project, and the owner wanted was the incorporation of a snake in the logo.

I got to work. First, I studied the market. What are other small business jewelers doing for their own branding? Many jewelers within the Fort Collins area were all following a similar framework. It was hard to distinguish between the brands not only in their minimalist style logos, and their “western-esque” personalities but also in the jewelry they were selling. The marketing seemed to broad

Mercy Metal Company needed to stand out just as much as the products did. Mercy Metal Co. creates pieces that stand out, with big colorful stones, intricate detailing, and exceptional craftsmanship. This brand is for people who love to disrupt the modern dainty jewelry scene you see today. Its brand is based on quality, unique design, and every piece is one of a kind.

I started by drafting up different designs on scratch paper to get an idea of how to incorporate multiple elements that would come together to create an eye-catching logo.

Then, in Affinity Design, I brought a couple of these in to work on bringing them to life with another rough draft.

After creating the final design, I took this further by designing the rest of the most important branding material.
